Police’s Detective Branch has arrested the friend identified as the “prime suspect” in the killing of Ashraful Haque, whose dismembered body recovered from a plastic drum near the High Court in Dhaka.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said in a statement that Jarezul Islam was arrested on Friday night in Cumilla’s Daudkandi.
Ashraful was killed over an alleged “extramarital relationship”, and Jarezul is described as the “main perpetrator”, it added.
RAB-3, in a separate statement, said they arrested Shamima -- identified with a single name as Jarezul’s partner and a suspect in the case -- with “several pieces of evidence”.
The elite force, however, did not immediately specify where she had been detained.
The body was discovered on Thursday evening near the National Eidgah ground, close to the High Court.
Initially, the 26-piece dismembered body could not be identified, but police confirmed Ashraful’s identity using fingerprints and the national ID database.
Police said Ashraful was from Nayapara village in Gopalpur Union of Badarganj, Rangpur.
Ashraful’s sister Anzina Begum filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station on Friday. Police had earlier said they were searching for his friend Jarezul as the “prime suspect” in the murder.
Anzina said Ashraful had no personal enmity with anyone. She last spoke to him on Wednesday afternoon. Later, when she called him, his friend Jarez answered, saying Ashraful was busy.
She learned of his death the next day and demanded the maximum punishment for those involved.
Police said Ashraful was a raw goods trader, importing onions and potatoes from India and Myanmar, and held the government licence for his business.
The incident coincided with the announcement of the date for the verdict in ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s crimes against humanity case.
On the same day, the Awami League had declared a lockdown programme, and law enforcers was deployed across Dhaka for heightened security.
Amid tight surveillance, a drum containing 26 dismembered parts of Ashraful’s body was spotted near the High Court during the day.
Locals alerted police, and remains were recovered in the evening.
