India has confirmed receiving Bangladesh's formal request to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and says the matter is now under review.
The development comes as Dhaka steps up efforts to bring Hasina back to face justice.
According to an audio recording of Friday's weekly media briefing by India's Ministry of External Affairs, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Bangladesh's extradition request was under examination in line with legal and judicial processes.
Responding to a question from Republic TV, Jaiswal said: “We have received a request for extradition.
“This request, as we have said earlier as well, is under examination and it will... be taken into consideration giving the legalities that are involved and judicial processes that are involved,” Jaiswal added.
He was also asked about a separate extradition request from Bangladesh's home ministry involving another suspect currently in Indian police custody in connection with the pre-election killing of a prominent politician.
Jaiswal said he could not immediately confirm receiving that specific request but stressed that all extradition pleas would be handled under the same process.
"Any extradition request will be looked into given its legalities given the legal issues that are involved and the judicial processes that are involved," he said.
The issue has remained a key point of tension since the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024, when Hasina fled to India. She was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising,
Bangladesh's interim government also pursued her extradition to stand trial before the International Crimes Tribunal, which had also issued multiple arrest warrants against her.
