A father and his three sons have suffered serious burn injuries after an alleged gas leak sparked a fire in Narayanganj’s Fatullah.
The incident occurred at a single-storey house in the Kutubpur Rakhibazar area next to Fatullah’s Shibu Market, according to Apurbo Bol, an officer at the Shibu Market Fire Station.
The victims have been identified as Abdul Kader, 50, and his sons Mehedy, 17, Sakib, 16, and Rakib, 16.
The three have been rescued and admitted to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in critical condition, says Shawon Bin Rahman, assistant professor at the institute.
Abdul has burns on 57 percent of his body, while Mehedy has burns on 18 percent, Sakib on 17 percent, and Rakib on 25 percent.
“Mehedy and Rakib have suffered burns in their airways as well,” he said. “All four of them are in critical condition.”
Md Faruk, a neighbour who took them to the hospital, said that Abdul was an autorickshaw driver, while his son Mehedy sold Haleem, Sakib worked in a factory, and Rakib sold Chotpoti.
Abdul, his wife, and sons rented the house, he said. The family hailed from Chandpur’s Matlab Upazila.
The father and three sons were sleeping at the time of the incident, while their mother had gone out of the house to get water.
“There was a loud explosion in the morning,” Faruk said. “Neighbours rushed to the house to find the doors and windows had broken down. We then brought the three burn victims out of the house.”
They believe that the fire may have started due to a buildup of gas in the house or from the refrigerator compressor.
Fire Service official Apurbo said, “The explosion may have been caused by gas collecting from a leak. The front door and windows of the building were damaged in the blast. The fire did not spread too far, but three people have been burnt.”
On Sunday, a couple and their three children had suffered serious burn injuries after a blast from a gas leak in Fatullah’s Giridhara area.
The five burn victims were later admitted to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute and are currently receiving treatment. They remain in critical condition.
