Police have taken a female student into custody for questioning as a “suspect” over the murder of Jobayed Hossen, a Jagannath University leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
The arrest took place shortly after 11pm on Sunday, as the officers picked up the student from Noor Box Lane at Old Dhaka’s Armanitola.
Deputy Commissioner (Lalbagh Division) Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami confirmed the development.
Earlier, police had questioned the student and her family members for nearly five hours at the building where Jobayed’s body was discovered.
The blood-soaked body of Jobayed, a student of the Department of Statistics, was found on the staircase between the third and fourth floors of the building on Sunday evening.
He used to tutor the detained student in mathematics and science; she lived with her family on the fifth floor.
Until 11pm, Jobayed’s body remained at the scene as members of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) collected evidence. Around 11:15pm, the body was sent to Mitford Hospital morgue for postmortem.
The news of his murder triggered outrage among his friends and fellow JCD activists. They rushed from the campus to Noor Box Lane and gathered beneath the building, shouting slogans demanding justice. Teachers and senior police officers also visited the site.
By around 10:45pm, Jagannath University students and JCD activists blocked the main road at Tantibazar, calling for the immediate arrest of the culprits.
They held the blockade for about an hour before marching toward Bangshal Police Station, where they continued their protest late into the night.
