Md Mohiuddin Ahmed has resigned his position as Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, or BTRC under clouds of investigations over the internet blackout during popular protests.
He tendered his resignation letter to the secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division on Wednesday afternoon.
The telecom advisor’s office said on Aug 13 that the mobile and broadband internet shutdowns during the recent Anti-discrimination Student Movement and public protests were carried out on the verbal instructions of the former state minister for the ministry Zunaid Ahmed Palak and under the direction of BTRC boss Mohiuddin.
The report said the shutdowns occurred between Jul 15-16, 2024, for mobile internet, and from Jul 18-23, 2024, and again on Aug 5, 2024, for broadband internet.
The report also noted that further investigations are ongoing.
However, in his resignation letter, Mohiuddin said he was standing down because of “health issues”.
“I am currently unwell and unable to fulfil the duties of the chairman of the BTRC. Therefore, I voluntarily resign from the position."
Efforts to reach him on his mobile phone for comments were unsuccessful.
Mohiuddin had been serving as chairman of the BTRC since Dec 14, 2023, after previously holding the position of vice chairman of the watchdog.
He had been absent from his duties since Aug 5, citing health reasons, following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.
