A Dhaka court has sentenced two people to life in prison and a third to 14 years in jail for the kidnapping and murder of 11-year-old Shafiqul Islam aka Milon in Dhaka’s Kafrul in 2008.

Two others have been acquitted in the case.

Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman delivered the verdict in the case on Sunday.

Al Amin Ghorami and Masud Rana received life in prison. They were also fined Tk 100,000 each. Defaulting on the fine will result in another year in prison for each of them.

The court also sentenced another person, who was 15 years old at the time of the crime, to 14 years in prison over the kidnapping. In addition to the jail sentence, he was also fined Tk 100,000. Defaulting on the fine will result in an additional year in prison.

Abdul Mottalleb aka Mota and Amirul Islam aka Rubel were both acquitted as their involvement in the crime could not be proven, according to Rashedul Islam, a bench assistant of the tribunal.

Rashedul said that the Dhaka district magistrate has been instructed to collect the fine money by auctioning off the immovable or movable properties of the convicts and giving it to the victim's family.

Masud Rana was present at the tribunal when the verdict was announced. After the verdict, he was sent to jail after a sentencing warrant was issued. Since the other two suspects are absconding, an arrest warrants and sentencing warrants have been issued for Ghorami and Saiful.

The case details say that, on Mar 6, 2008, Milan left home to play. He did not return. From Mar 7 to Mar 13, the kidnappers called Milon's family from different numbers at different times and demanded a ransom of Tk 200,000.

Milon's father Shafiqul Islam alias Shahid filed a kidnapping case with Kafrul Police Station on Mar 13. The police arrested the accused based on the call list. According to the information provided by them, the police recovered Milon’s bones and teeth, and some blood-stained stones from a place called Ramchandrapur Karnapara in Savar. After that, a murder charge was added to the case.

Kafrul Police Station Sub-Inspector Tahidul Islam submitted the charge sheet to the court on Aug 3, 2009. On the orders of the court, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was ordered to investigate the case.

CID Inspector Nurul Islam Siddiqui investigated the case and submitted the charge sheet against Al Amin, Masud, Mottaleb, Rubina Khatun, and Amiru Islam on Mar 23, 2011.

The trial began with the framing of charges against the accused after Rubina was dropped from the case. During the trial, the court heard the testimony of nine witnesses.

The tribunal’s verdict was delivered on Sunday after the prosecution and defence presented their arguments.
