Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has arrived in Chattogram on a daylong visit to attend Chittagong University's (CU) fifth convocation, along with several other scheduled programmes.
This marks his first visit to his home district since assuming responsibility as the head of the interim government.
Yunus landed at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram around 9:15am on Wednesday. His office later shared photos of his arrival on Facebook.
Shortly after arriving, he visited Yard-5 of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at the port. There, he attended a meeting and held discussions with senior officials from the port and shipping sectors, as well as representatives from port users’ associations and trade organisations.
The event featured a multimedia presentation highlighting the current operations and performance of the port, along with future prospects. Key infrastructure projects, both ongoing and proposed, such as the Bay Terminal and the Matarbari Deep Sea Port, were also discussed.
The chief advisor is also scheduled to visit the Chattogram Circuit House, where he will unveil the foundation stone for the Kalurghat Bridge over the Karnaphuli River, inspect the progress of efforts to address urban waterlogging, and review the implementation of the Oxygen–Hathazari road project.
During his time at the Circuit House, he will also hand over the registered deed for 23 acres of land allocated to the Chattogram Heart Foundation Hospital to the relevant authorities.
According to state news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the chief advisor will head to the CU campus in the afternoon. His academic career began in the university’s Department of Economics, where he served as a faculty member from 1972 to 1989.
The university’s fifth convocation will be held at the central sports ground at noon. Around 22,600 students from the academic years 2011 to 2023 will receive their degrees, and 22 people will be awarded PhDs earned between 2015 and 2025.
In recognition of his global contributions to poverty alleviation through microcredit and his efforts in promoting peace, Yunus will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the university.
“Under the leadership and guidance of the vice-chancellor, we’ve nearly completed all preparations to ensure the convocation is a success. This will be the largest convocation in the history of higher education in Bangladesh, with nearly 100,000 attendees expected to gather on campus for this grand event,” CU Registrar Prof Saiful Islam is quoted as saying by BSS.
After the convocation, Yunus will visit his ancestral home in Hathazari Upazila's Bathua village. The Chattogram district administration has made extensive preparations for his visit.
The chief advisor is scheduled to return to Dhaka in the evening after completing his engagements in Chattogram.
