Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amid intense a mass movement, several police stations in Dhaka have been attacked and set on fire.
Hundreds of people surrounded the Uttara East Police Station around 7:15pm on Monday.
Clashes took place when a fire was set under the police station, resulting in numerous people being shot.
Many of the injured were taken to the nearby Uttara Crescent Hospital.
A journalist at the hospital reported 10 deaths in the emergency department, with many injured individuals arriving, some of whom were shot.
The attacks began in the afternoon, with several police stations being set alight.
On the second day of the non-cooperation movement called by the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, which emerged from the quota reform protests, Hasina resigned after students and citizens took over the streets of Dhaka.
Reports indicate that several stations among the 50 in Dhaka were attacked, including those in Jatrabari, the Tejgaon Industrial Area, Mohammadpur, Uttara East, Badda, Rampura, and Khilgaon.
Senior police officials said many police personnel had evacuated their stations due to the threat of attacks.
However, casualties occurred during clashes at Uttara East Police Station.
When fires were set at the station, plain-clothed police officers attempted to control the situation by firing in the air and using tear gas from the roof.
Witnesses said brickbats were thrown at the police station, and fabric was set on fire and thrown at the building.
A bdnews24.com correspondent saw a fire burning at Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station around 4pm.
This station had previously been vandalised and then set ablaze.
Mohammadpur Police Station was attacked and set on fire at 5pm, with flames still visible after 6pm.
Fires were also reported at Khilgaon Police Station.
Kadamtali Police Station was declared abandoned on Sunday night.
An assistant sub inspector from Lalbagh Division told bdnews24.com that police were instructed to secure their weapons and essential documents and evacuate to safety due to the threat of attacks.
According to multiple police officers from Dhaka Metropolitan Police stations, most of the stations in the capital are now empty.
There has been no official comment from police regarding these attacks.
