A police case has been filed against a Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal leader for allegedly demanding extortion from the hospital founded by renowned kidney transplant specialist Professor Kamrul Islam.
The case was lodged by Abu Hanif, the operation theatre (OT) in-charge of the CKD Urology Hospital in Dhaka’s Shyamoli, naming local Jubo Dal leader Moin Uddin and seven to eight unidentified individuals as suspects.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police chief Monirul Islam confirmed the filing of the case on Saturday but noted that the primary suspect has not yet been apprehended.
According to the case statement, Moin had been harassing and threatening the complainant for some time, demanding Tk 500,000 in extortion.
The situation intensified around 8am on Friday when Moin and his associates arrived at the complainant’s residence in Shyamoli.
The intruders allegedly threatened the complainant's wife Mahinur, identified with a single name, warning of dire consequences for the family if the money was not paid immediately.
Later, a group of 50 to 60 people gathered outside the CKD hospital, creating chaos by shouting slogans and hurling insults.
The complaint alleges that the group intentionally tried to create disorder to divert attention from the extortion demand.
Police arrived at the scene to restore order after being alerted by the hospital staff.
Following media reports of the incident, a high-level delegation from the central Jubo Dal leadership visited the hospital late Friday night.
The leaders assured the physician that organisational action would be taken regarding the matter.
