Health officials have flagged nine wards in Chattogram as measles hotspots, pointing to rising infections in densely populated and industrial areas of the city.
The clusters were designated on Monday based on areas with the highest infection rates, according to Khadija Ahmed, surveillance and immunisation medical officer (SIMO) for the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Chattogram City Corporation.
The locations are: Ward 2 (Jalalabad), Ward 4 (Chandgaon), Ward 9 (North Pahartali), Ward 14 (Lalkhan Bazar), Ward 18 (East Bakalia), Ward 31 (Alkaran), Ward 38 (South Middle Halishahar), Ward 39 (South Halishahar), and Ward 40 (North Patenga).
According to WHO guidelines, Bangladesh is currently experiencing a measles outbreak, Khadija told bdnews24.com.
“Positive cases are present everywhere, not just in Chattogram."
The official noted that infections are being detected more frequently in the city’s densely populated industrial zones, which see a regular influx of people from other districts.
"The number of detected cases is relatively higher at Bandar-Patenga, Sadarghat-Alkaran-Kotwali, and Bakalia," she added.
In light of the situation, doctors and health officials are stressing the importance of the measles vaccine.
Moreover, the public is advised to follow hygiene protocols, avoid mass gatherings, and ensure those infected are kept in isolation for treatment.
Six people have died in Chattogram district until now after exhibiting measles symptoms, according to data from the Civil Surgeon Office.
Four were residents of the city, while the other two were from the Sadar Upazila.
One child's death has been officially confirmed as measles-related in the district.
