Work on border fencing by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) near Panchbibi in Joypurhat has been stopped after the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) reportedly raised objections during a flag meeting between the two sides.
The flag meeting between the two border forces was held on Tuesday night, after which the work was suspended, a local union council member said.
He said the BGB accused the Indian border force of violating international law.
However, Joypurhat-20 BGB Battalion Commander Lt Col Latiful Bari was unavailable for comments despite several phone calls.
Another BGB official declined to comment when called.
According to the Joint Indo-Bangladesh Guidelines for Border Authorities issued in 1975, neither country is allowed to build permanent military posts, defence structures, or defensive fortifications within 150 yards of the working boundary line.
Citing locals, Dharanji Union Council Member Laizur Rahman said the BSF members started constructing a fence near the border, ignoring that rule.
When they reported the matter to the BGB, the latter rushed to the scene.
Locals said the BSF had been repairing the fence near sub-pillars 47 and 48 under pillar No. 281 of the East Uchna (Ghonapara) border near the BGB’s Kaya border outpost.
As part of the project, the BSF members started their work near the zero line on Tuesday night before the BGB intervened after locals informed them.
The union council member said: “If the barbed-wire fence gets old or rusty or damaged, the BSF sometimes repairs it or installs a new one.
“But we notice that when they do that, there is a tendency to do it from the zero point towards Bangladesh’s territory,” he said.
