Zahid Ahamed Limon, the Bangladeshi student killed while pursuing higher studies in the US state of Florida, has been laid to rest beside grandparents in Jamalpur’s Madarganj Upazila.
His younger brother Zubayer Ahamed said he was buried next to his paternal grandparents in the family graveyard in Karaichara Union around 8pm on Monday.
Before that, Limon’s funeral prayers were offered at a local primary school where hundreds, including local MP and Upazila administrator, gathered.
Zubayer recounted, "My brother used to think a lot about the country. The assailant not only killed my brother, but destroyed our family's happiness and dreams. The murderer also killed a visionary of the country. ”
He demanded that the government keep in touch with the US authorities to ensure justice for his brother.
“May nobody else, like my brother, be a victim to such murders abroad," said a wailing Zubayer.
An Emirates flight carrying Limon’s body landed in Dhaka at 8:59am which was later taken to Jamalpur.
Limon's father, Zahurul Haque, said: "I never slapped Limon or hurt him. I only warned him verbally. He would tell me to be calm.
“He would say, 'Dad, don't worry. You don't have to work. You do business'," recalled Zahurul.
"I want justice for those who killed my son."
Limon, a graduate of Khulna University, was pursuing a PhD in geography, environmental science and policy at the University of South Florida. He had been missing since the morning of Apr 16.
Another PhD student from the same university, Nahida Sultana Bristy, had also gone missing around the same time. Bristy, a former student of Noakhali Science and Technology University, was studying chemical engineering.
Their families could not contact them and found their phones switched off. They later contacted police responsible for the university area.
On Apr 24, Limon’s body was found near a local bridge. Police later informed Bristy’s family by phone that she had also been killed.
Limon’s death has cast a shadow of grief over his family, friends and local residents. They demand justice over the killing.
