Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said the government is working to introduce a retirement benefit for journalists.
He made the remarks on Saturday while visiting ailing journalist Ismail Hossain at the Bangladesh Medical University.
The minister highlighted the lack of institutional protection for media workers, noting that despite being considered the "fourth pillar" of a democratic state, journalists often work under significant uncertainty.
"The issue of financial security for journalists has been neglected for a long time," he said.
"In light of this reality, the government has taken the initiative to launch a retirement pension for them so they can live with dignity in their later years."
Swapon added that while journalism is a prestigious profession, it is "unfortunate" that many veteran journalists face severe financial hardships at the end of their lives.
Beyond financial aid, the minister said the government is drafting policies to ensure both the freedom and accountability of the media.
He emphasised that state patronage is essential to sustain the talented individuals who serve society.
"Ensuring a safe and dignified working environment for professionals like journalists is a top priority for this government," he added.
