The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested three men for the brutal murder and decapitation of an easy-bike driver in Manikganj, revealing that the suspects killed their own friend to fund their drug addiction.
The victim, Rafiq Mia, a resident of Rathuria village in Gior Upazila, went missing with his vehicle on Tuesday.
His headless body was recovered from the Kaliganga River on Wednesday afternoon.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, PBI Superintendent of Police Joyita Shilpi confirmed the arrests of Ripon Mia, 30, Arman Hossain, 20, and Sajib Hossain, 25.
"The arrestees were long-time friends of Rafiq," SP Shilpi said. "They plotted to hijack his easy-bike to raise money for drugs. Following their plan, they lured him to the banks of the Kaliganga River, where they murdered him and severed his head."
The PBI tracked the suspects using information technology, initially apprehending Ripon from the Kalampur area in Dhamrai.
His confession led to the arrests of Arman and Sajib.
Following the arrests, police recovered the stolen easy-bike along with a machete and a hammer used in the killing.
The victim's brother Arif Mia had earlier filed a murder case with Gior Police Station.
The PBI said the investigation is ongoing to determine if any others were involved in the crime.
