The government is monitoring the weather and the overall situation before deciding whether to hold or postpone the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams on Monday due to heavy rain in different parts of the country, including Dhaka.
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said that the decision will be taken after analysing the information from the deputy commissioners (DCs), the heads of the education boards, and the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
“The education ministry and concerned officials have held a meeting regarding the rain situation in Dhaka. Since yesterday (Saturday), we have been monitoring the situation in all the districts by keeping in touch with the DCs and education boards of 64 districts. After receiving the latest weather forecast, the necessary decision will be taken by holding another meeting,” he said at an event at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka on Sunday.
“If the exams in any area are postponed, arrangements have also been made to hold them later. A decision will be taken after considering the situation.”
There were no HSC and equivalent exams on Sunday. The first paper in Physics, Mathematics, and Logic is scheduled for Monday. Exams will also be held on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Several days of continuous rain and flooding have led to the postponement of all HSC and equivalent exams of the Chattogram Education Board until Jul 16.
This year, the HSC exams are being held under nine general education boards with a common question paper. The exams started on Jul 2.
‘Question Paper Leak Reports are Rumours’
The minister dismissed claims that the question papers have leaked. He said, "In fact, no question paper is being leaked. A group is using deception on different media, including Telegram, using fake question papers."
He called on the media to play a responsible role in this regard.
He said, "If news is published in such a way that it suggests a question paper has been leaked, the group who cheat is encouraged. Rather, it should be clearly stated that the question paper has not leaked."
The education minister also said that initiatives have been taken to strengthen the law to curb cybercrimes like question paper leaks. Milon said that the information spread on social media is being monitored and those involved are being identified and brought to book.
The education minister also took a strict stance on irregularities at examination centres.
He said, "A case has been filed in the incident of a centre in Bhola's Charfesson. Action will be taken to identify those involved after analysing the video footage.
"Similarly, in the incident of a teacher in Cumilla who used a student to evaluate an answer sheet instead of checking himself, the teacher has been arrested, and efforts are underway to find the student concerned."
Milon warned that no irregularities will be tolerated in the examination management.
According to him, every complaint is being investigated seriously, and action will be taken against the culprits as per the law.
