A medical technologist has died after a speeding truck ran him over in Panchagarh.

The accident took place at 9:30pm on Sunday in front of Pakuritala Madina Cold Storage on the Debiganj-Boda Asian Highway, according to Debiganj Police chief (OC) KM Moniruzzaman Chowdhury.

The victim, 38-year-old Somesh Chandra, worked at the “Mayer Hashi Diagnostic Centre” in Debiganj town and was returning home after his shift when he was hit by the sand-laden truck, according to police and witnesses.

He was seriously injured and died at the scene, despite efforts by locals to rescue him.

Residents say the highway is prone to accidents due to “unplanned” and “faulty” speed breakers, which cause vehicles to veer out of control when forced to brake suddenly.

OC Moniruzzaman said the truck and its driver Mohammad Saddam Hossain, 36, were taken into custody immediately after the crash and legal proceedings are under way.
