Election environment excellent and candidate debates positive, says Commissioner Anwarul

According to the EC, 144 code-of-conduct violations across 128 constituencies in January have led to fines of Tk 905,500

Despite reports of clashes between supporters of rival candidates across the country, Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarker describes the polling environment as “excellent".

He also views speeches and debates around pledges and manifestos at rallies as “positive”.

“Elections naturally involve discussions about parties, candidates’ agendas, and manifestos,” he said on Tuesday at his Agargaon office.

“In speeches, candidates highlight both positive and negative aspects of one another. The public analyses these and decides whom to vote for.”

With the Feb 12 election approaching, nearly 2,000 candidates are actively campaigning nationwide.

Clashes among supporters have already been reported in several districts.

“Based on media reports and our field observations, the Election Commission believes that the environment this year is far better than in many past elections,” Anwarul said.

Some candidates have faced attacks, prompting complaints to the commission and raising concerns about safety.

On these issues, he said: “Many questions have been raised about potential risks. The Election Commission itself is not expressing any concern.

“Our political leaders regularly advise and update us, and we take immediate action accordingly.”

He added that issues flagged in media or on social platforms are promptly conveyed to returning officers.

“We ensure law enforcement takes swift legal action, and the commission takes immediate measures as well,” he said.

Asked about specific steps taken, he said returning officers act as the commission’s representatives on the ground with full authority.

They, along with mobile courts and electoral inquiry and judge committees, handle complaints promptly, he added.

“Every day, we receive reports of at least 50–60 cases, with fines and notices issued. The process is running at full pace,” he said.

According to Election Commission data, in January alone, 144 code-of-conduct violations were recorded across 128 constituencies, resulting in Tk 905,000 in fines and 94 cases filed.
