The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two people accused of embezzling Tk 35 million by promising jobs in Australia, Italy, and other European countries with attractive salaries.

The arrestees are Nusrat Jahan, 28, and Md Sohan, 24.

According to a RAB statement, they were arrested in Dhaka’s Mirpur on Monday.

RAB said the suspects opened an office under the name BFC Global Consultancy and promoted overseas job opportunities in several European countries through Facebook advertisements, offering lucrative salaries.

Quoting a case filed with Pallabi Police Station, the statement said the victims visited the office around six months ago to discuss opportunities for going abroad.

At the time, they were told it would cost Tk 900,000 per person to go to Australia, Tk 600,000 for Kuwait, Tk 2 million for Italy, and Tk 800,000 per person for Serbia.

Under agreements promising overseas placement within three months, the victims transferred a total of Tk 35 million to several private bank accounts.

A month after receiving the money, the victims were allegedly provided with fake Australian visas.

Flight tickets were also issued after travel dates had been fixed.

RAB said the suspects later informed the victims, a day before departure, that the tickets had been cancelled citing “excuses”.

Following the case, RAB identified the locations of the two and arrested them.
