Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has informed the UN that Bangladesh Police has completed preparations to face the challenge of the current unstable and complex security situation in Haiti.
The minister made the statement during a bilateral meeting with Atul Khare, under-secretary-general of the United Nations Department of Operational Support (DOS), according to a media statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs around midnight on Monday.
The minister is currently in New York to participate in the 5th United Nations Police Chiefs' Conference 'UN-COPS' at the UN Headquarters.
A five-member delegation from Bangladesh is scheduled to return home on Jul 12 after the conference on Jul 7-8.
During the meeting, the home minister told the UN under-secretary-general, "Bangladesh Police has completed preparations to deploy three highly modern and highly capable specialised police units formed to meet the challenges of the current unstable and complex security situation in Haiti."
He said that, compared with conventional police unit, these units are particularly proficient in SWAT, Rapid Response Platoon, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Forensic and Crime Scene Management, Organized Crime and Cybercrime Investigation, Naval Operations and Counter-Narcotics Operations.
According to the statement, the minister submitted proposals to the relevant UN departments on how these specialised units could be deployed most effectively in Haiti.
"A three-member high-level delegation of Bangladesh Police will participate in the MoU discussion at the UN Headquarters from Jul 15-17 for detailed discussions on this issue,” it said.
“The minister expects the full cooperation of the relevant departments of the United Nations to make these discussions successful and to incorporate the proposed equipment."
The minister also said Bangladesh is ready to deploy specialised police teams or platoons alongside self-reliant units from other police-contributing countries, in addition to full police units.
The meeting also discussed operational cooperation involving Bangladeshi military and police contingents serving in UN peacekeeping missions, financial compensation, environmentally sustainable development, the Women, Peace and Security agenda, and preparations for deploying Bangladesh's specialised police contingent to Haiti.
Stating that Bangladesh is deeply committed to reducing the carbon footprint or environmental damage of peacekeeping missions as one of the countries most at risk from climate change, Salahuddin said: "Bangladesh is the first country in the world to install solar panels at a UN peacekeeping mission. Using Bangladesh's specialised experience and capabilities in this sector, Bangladesh is interested in working with the UN to install renewable energy and solar panels more widely in mission areas in the future."
According to him, Bangladesh is determined to implement the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda.
He urged the UN to increase investment in building more environmentally friendly and women-friendly infrastructure to ensure a safe, suitable and conducive working environment for women peacekeepers in the mission area.
He also emphasised increasing the capacity of peacekeepers and providing them with better training so that they can perform their duties more efficiently in adverse or hostile situations.
After exchanging greetings at the beginning of the meeting, the minister sincerely thanked the under-secretary-general for the continuous and effective support of the DOS in facilitating the replenishment of Bangladeshi military and police forces deployed in peacekeeping missions.
At the same time, he also thanked the Department of Environment of the DOS for its special contribution to environmental protection by installing solar panels in UN peacekeeping missions.
