Bangladeshi doctoral student Nahida Sultana Bristy, who was murdered in the US, has been buried in her family graveyard in Madaripur Sadar Upazila.
She was laid to rest next to her grandparents in Char Gobindapur village of Khojapur Union on Saturday afternoon, following her last funeral at a local school after Asr prayers.
Madaripur Sadar Upazila administrator (UNO) Wadia Shabab, local public representatives and locals participated in the funeral.
Bristy’s first funeral service took place in Tampa, Florida on Wednesday.
She was the only daughter of Zahir Uddin Akon of the village.
Earlier in the day, her body reached Dhaka on an Emirates Airlines flight via Dubai at 9:10am.
Later, her parents and relatives received the body at Shahjalal International Airport and brought it to the village around 1:15pm.
Her father said: "We cannot accept this grief at all. She was supposed to return home with joy, but she returned dead.
“We want exemplary justice for this murder," said a wailing Zahir.
Bristy’s cousin Zabin Mariam said, "It is difficult to accept that a girl who was always smiling would be killed like this; that too in the US. We want justice for her."
Bristy, a former student of Noakhali University of Science and Technology, was studying at the University of South Florida (USF).
She and another PhD student from the same university, Jamil Ahamed Limon, went missing on Apr 16.
Limon, a Jamalpur resident and a former student of Khulna University, was found dead on Apr 24.
Police later informed Bristy’s family by phone that she had also been murdered.
The couple, both aged 27, were in a relationship and planned to marry after completing their doctorates, a decision supported by both families.
Limon’s roommate Hisham Abugharbieh was arrested and faces two counts of first-degree murder.
The USF has posthumously awarded doctoral degrees to both Bangladeshi students.
Limon was buried at his village home in Jamalpur’s Madarganj Upazila on May 4.
On Saturday, the Bangladesh government said it has been working to ensure a proper investigation and due justice in the double murder.
