The BNP has begun meetings with its allies to decide on a course of action regarding the general election by December.
After a meeting with the 12-party alliance on Saturday afternoon, BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan said no street agitation is needed against the interim government.
“We believe the government will work according to people’s aspirations,” he said.
The BNP held a separate meeting with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) following one with the 12-party alliance at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office in Dhaka.
The party has become vocal for the election amid the interim government’s reform initiatives after the Awami League government’s fall in a mass uprising on Aug 5 last year.
Earlier on Mar 30, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir warned that the party would return to the field demanding prompt election and the power to be handed over to an elected government in the people’s interest.
A seven-strong BNP delegation held a meeting with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday to discuss the national vote’s timeframe.
Fakhrul expressed their "dissatisfaction" while speaking to journalists after the meeting.
Responding to a question over the BNP’s plan if the election does not take place by December, he said: “We will come back again after we discuss the situation internally and with our allied parties… We will make a decision.”
In continuation, the BNP has started meeting with the affiliated groups and alliances who were in the movement simultaneously during the Awami League government.
After the meeting with the 12-party alliance, Nazrul said: “We have started discussing what we can do with all those who were on the streets in the anti-fascist movement."
"At the end of this discussion, we will tell you what we can or cannot do," he added.
