At least 66 passengers have been injured when nine coaches of the Nilsagar Express derailed in Bogura, with many sustaining injuries after jumping from the overcrowded train roof in panic, railway authorities said.

A railways ministry statement on Wednesday night said 20 of the injured were admitted to Naogaon Sadar Hospital, while 40 were released after primary treatment.

It added that six others were treated and discharged from Adamdighi Upazila Health Complex.

Santahar Station Master Khadija Khanam said: “The accident occurred about 1.5 kilometres from the station. The train had 13 coaches, nine of which derailed.

“Each coach carried around 62 passengers. Due to Eid, there were extra passengers inside, and many were on the roof. Those who jumped from the roof were mostly the ones injured.”

Witnesses described chaotic scenes.

One local said: “Many passengers were on the roof. Some jumped, others could not get down. We brought down around 100 people using ladders. One man’s leg was severed after he jumped in panic. There was a lot of screaming.”

The train, carrying Eid travellers from Dhaka to Chilahati, left at 6:45am and derailed near Bagmara after departing Santahar around 2pm.

Relief trains from Ishwardi and Parbatipur began operations around 7:45pm, with clearance expected to “take hours”.

Rail links to northern districts remained suspended, prompting emergency transfer arrangements for stranded passengers.
