Rescuers have recovered the body of a child after a boat capsized in the Turag River at Kaliakair in Gazipur, leaving another child still missing.

A diving team from Tongi Fire Station pulled out the body along with the sunken boat around 11am on Friday, said Md Alauddin, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence (Savar and Kaliakair zone).

The child was identified as Ankita Moni Das, 5, daughter of Madan Moni Das. Tanmay Madan Das, 8, son of Taposh Moni Das, remains missing.

According to the Fire Service, the two children were on a boat trip with relatives on Thursday evening.

The vessel was hit by another trawler near Chapair Bridge in Hijaltoli, where Durga Puja idols were being immersed. The boat sank in deep water.

While other passengers managed to swim ashore, the two children went missing.

Local firemen launched a search that evening but failed to locate them before nightfall.

A diving team resumed operations on Friday morning and recovered Ankita’s body trapped with the boat.

As of 3pm Friday, Tanmay remained untraced and the search was still under way, said fire service officers.
