Chief Advisor Yunus to address the nation on Friday evening

He is expected to extend Eid greetings to the public and also address the overall situation in the country

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus is set to address the nation on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha.

The speech will be broadcast simultaneously on state-run television and radio at 7pm on Friday, according to the Chief Advisor’s Office.

Previously, Yunus addressed the nation on Mar 25 ahead of Independence Day and Eid-ul-Fitr.

In his upcoming speech, he is expected to extend Eid greetings to the public and also speak about the country’s overall situation.

The address may touch upon the recent tensions stemming from various issues, including the proposed "humanitarian corridor" in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, the decision to hand over operations of Chattogram Port terminals to foreign companies, and debates surrounding the timing of national elections. These matters had led to political tensions in the latter half of May amid speculation about Yunus’s resignation.

On Aug 5, Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina stepped down as prime minister and left for India following a student-led mass uprising, bringing an end to her party's 15-year rule.

Yunus and his Advisory Council for the interim government were sworn in on Aug 8. On that day, Yunus also delivered his first speech to the nation as chief advisor.

In recent months, various reform commissions formed by the government have submitted recommendations. Based on these, the National Consensus Commission, headed by Yunus himself, is now engaged in dialogue with political parties to build national consensus.

Yunus has said that the timing of the next election will depend on the extent of reforms achieved. If key reforms are completed, elections could be held as early as December. With additional reforms, the vote could be conducted by June next year. However, the election will not be delayed beyond June, according to him.
