Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on doctors to deliver care that restores public trust in Bangladesh's healthcare system.

On Saturday, he said the country loses roughly $5 billion every year as patients travel abroad for treatment, addressing current and future doctors directly.

"Millions of our people are going abroad for treatment. As a result, our valuable foreign currency is leaving the country along with them.

"What I want to [know from you] is: Why can't we change this situation? Why can't we build people's trust and confidence in our own doctors?"

At "DMC Day" marking Dhaka Medical College’s 81st anniversary, Tarique said lasting healthcare improvements must come through doctors’ “humane approach and quality care”.

He expressed hope that people would one day place full confidence in doctors across all hospitals and medical colleges in Bangladesh.

His wife Zubaida Rahman was a member of the 43rd batch of Dhaka Medical College.

Their visit drew enthusiastic crowds of teachers and students.

The prime minister drove himself to the venue with his wife.

They inaugurated “DMC Day” by releasing balloons and pigeons before visiting Kazi Fazlul Huq Women’s Hostel, where Zubaida once lived as a student, and later greeted current students.
