Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to review the incident involving the assault on journalists performing their professional duties in Dhaka's Dhanmondi.
The party says organisational action will be taken against any of its activists if their involvement in the violence is proven.
The party's Central Publicity and Media Secretary Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon that Jamaat would conduct an internal review to find out who was behind the incident and how it had unfolded.
Journalists were allegedly assaulted in Dhanmondi Road 32 around 8:45am, following a protest programme by Jamaat activists.
The protest was held in connection with the 77th founding anniversary of the Awami League, whose activities are banned.
Mahfuzur Rahman Shishir, multimedia reporter of Dainik Sokal, was reportedly beaten during the incident while carrying out his assignment.
Reporter Maruf Hossain of The News was also injured, and at least 10 journalists were allegedly harassed.
Zubair said the party had learned that the “unpleasant situation” arose after the peaceful conclusion of the protest, triggered by “overly enthusiastic individuals or outside provocateurs”.
"Jamaat-e-Islami never tolerates any breach of party discipline or any extremist behaviour," he said, adding that anyone found involved would face strict organisational action.
He described the attack on journalists as “unexpected, unwanted and regrettable”, and expressed “deep regret” over the incident.
Dhaka South City Jamaat Assistant Publicity Secretary Abdus Sattar Suman visited injured journalist Shishir to offer his condolences.
He told bdnews24.com that the incident was unexpected and the result of a misunderstanding.
"Shishir always covers our programmes," he said. "We are trying to identify those involved organisationally and are also looking into whether outsiders took advantage of the situation."
