The government has granted magistracy powers to Army personnel deployed in six districts amid heightened security over the Awami League’s founding anniversary.
On Monday, the public administration ministry said commissioned Army officers of the rank of captain and above will be able to exercise these powers in the designated areas.
Officers on deputation in the Bangladesh Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) of equivalent rank will also be authorised to use the authority.
According to a ministry notification, the powers will remain in effect from Jun 22 to Jun 30 in Dhaka, Chattogram and Gazipur metropolitan areas, and in Narayanganj, Gopalganj and Faridpur districts.
On Sunday morning, the government decided to deploy the Army in six districts to maintain law and order ahead of the anniversary of the Awami League, which remains banned from carrying out political activities.
In a letter sent to the principal staff officer of the Bangladesh Army, the home ministry said there were fears that “illegal rallies, showdowns and other events by banned organisations” could lead to sabotage and disorder, potentially worsening the law and order situation and causing significant damage to life and property.
It requested deployment under “Aid to Civil Power” from Jun 22 to Jun 30 to ensure public safety and protect lives and property.
Concerns over possible unrest around Awami League events had been building for days.
The Police Headquarters also issued an “urgent message” on Thursday, instructing forces nationwide to take necessary precautions and strengthen security measures.
