Bangladesh has added Shariakandi and Dhunot in Bogura to its list of inland river ports.

The shipping ministry issued separate gazette notifications on Wednesday, defining the boundaries of both Jamuna River ports.

The country now has 56 inland river ports, up from 54, after Hatia in Noakhali became the last addition.

The notifications outline the northern, southern and land boundaries, extending 50 yards inland from the highest normal high-water mark on both riverbanks.

Existing canals and docks within the gazetted limits will fall under each port, while conflicting authorities will cease to apply for navigation and infrastructure development.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has been appointed custodian of both ports.
