The father of murdered child Ramisa Akter has welcomed the verdict in the rape and murder case, saying it has fulfilled his expectations.
He has voiced hope that the death sentences handed down to the two convicts will be carried out quickly.
On Sunday, after the court sentenced both convicts to death, Abdul Hannan Molla said the ruling had delivered the justice he had sought for his daughter.
“Insha Allah, I am fully hopeful the verdict will be executed soon. By the grace of Allah and within the timeframe given by the prime minister, we have received the justice we wanted.”
He also expressed gratitude to the judge, police administration, journalists and people of Bangladesh for standing by his family during the crisis, while reiterating his demand for the rapid implementation of the death penalty.
Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal pronounced the double capital punishment against the prime suspect Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter at noon.
Alongside the death sentences, the court fined Sohel Tk 500,000 and Swapna Tk 200,000.
The tribunal ordered that the fines be recovered from the sale of their movable and immovable assets and handed over to the victim's family.
Public Prosecutor Azizur Rahman Dulu welcomed the court's decision, saying Ramisa’s father has finally received absolute justice, leaving the prosecution team satisfied.
State-appointed defence counsel Musa Kalimullah also expressed contentment with the judicial outcome, pointing out that Sohel had voluntarily given a confessional statement before a magistrate and also admitted his guilt during the self-defence hearing
"Justice has been served. The guilty have faced the consequences of their crime. I am satisfied," he added.
Asked whether he would appeal against the sentences, he said the state had appointed him to represent the suspects and he would appeal only if the state directed him to do so.
