A former leader of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement (AdSM) has come under attack in Jamalpur.

Witnesses said the incident occurred around 1:30pm on Sunday at the Fouzdari intersection in Jamalpur town, shortly after a street rally organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP).

The victim, Safayat Turjo, former joint member secretary of the AdSM’s Jamalpur district unit, has been admitted to a private hospital following the attack.

Speaking to journalists, Turjo alleged: “I was standing with friends at Fouzdari More when suddenly a group of around 25 people led by Abid Sourav, a member of NCP’s Jamalpur district committee, surrounded me and began beating me indiscriminately.”

He added, “A few days ago, I made a Facebook post accusing Abid Sourav of extortion. I believe this attack was a direct consequence of that post.”

Dia, a former AdSM leader in Jamalpur who gave a single name, said: “Turjo, another friend, and I were chatting when a man approached and asked Turjo how he was. Right after that, others came and attacked him.”

However, NCP leader Abid denied the allegations. “I was not involved in this incident. I don’t know who attacked him,” he said.

“After hearing that Turjo was injured, I personally visited him at the hospital.”

Sadar Police Station chief Abu Faisal Md Atik said no formal complaint has been filed over the incident, which he described as “minor”.
