Just hours after a wedding, the groom and his newlywed bride set out to return home with family members. They had travelled a long stretch from Khulna’s Koyra Upazila and reached Rampal in Bagerhat when a devastating accident struck, claiming the lives of the couple and their relatives.
A head-on collision between a Navy bus and the microbus carrying the groom, bride, and family members killed 14 people on Thursday, with seven of the dead from the same family.
Local BNP leaders said the microbus carried relatives who had travelled to Koyra to celebrate the wedding.
Among those killed were Md Sabbir, the groom, his wife Marzia Akter Mitu, her sister, identified only as Lamia, their grandmother, and other family members from West Shela Baniyar.
Sabbir’s father Abdur Razzak, who is the BNP president of Ward 8 of Mongla Municipality, also died in the crash, along with a father and son from Mongla who had attended the wedding.
The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon near Belai Bridge on the Khulna-Mongla Highway.
According to Katakhali Highway Police chief Md Zafar Ahmed, the Navy bus was returning from Mongla while the microbus was travelling from Khulna to Mongla.
“Four passengers in the microbus, including three women, died at the scene. Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to hospital,” he said.
Sukanta Pal, medical officer at Rampal Upazila Health Complex, confirmed six injured were brought in; four had already died, and two were transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Dr Mehnaz Mosharraf at Khulna Medical College said 11 victims arrived at their emergency department, eight were declared dead, and two more later succumbed to injuries.
