Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Rohingya refugees and host communities during a visit by TAKAHASHI Naoki, minister of the Japanese embassy in Bangladesh, to Cox’s Bazar.
The minister conducted a two-day visit to Rohingya camps there on Jul 19–20, according to a statement issued by the embassy.
On Jul 19, Naoki attended the inauguration of "The Project for the Improvement of the Facility and Medical Equipment at the Primary Healthcare Centre" at Rohingya Camp 24 in Teknaf.
The project, implemented by NGO MedGlobal under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP), is expected to benefit about 40,000 people, including some 17,000 patients annually, through upgraded facilities and essential medical equipment.
The minister praised MedGlobal's work and expressed confidence that the organisation would ensure the project's long-term sustainability for both refugees and neighbouring host communities.
Referring to the recent heavy monsoon rains in Cox's Bazar, Naoki extended condolences to the families of those who died and expressed sympathy to those affected, saying Japan remained committed to strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities.
On Jul 20, he visited a UNHCR registration centre, a World Food Programme food distribution centre, a UN Women-led market, an IOM shelter site, a Japan-supported Friendship primary healthcare centre and a Save the Children learning centre backed through the Japan Platform.
Since the mass influx of Rohingya refugees in August 2017, Japan has provided more than $242 million in assistance through international organisations and NGOs for food, healthcare, water and sanitation, shelters, protection and gender-related programmes.
The statement said Japan would continue working with Bangladesh and the international community towards resolving the Rohingya humanitarian crisis while acknowledging Bangladesh's continued hosting of around 1.2 million Rohingya refugees.
