Five members of a family, including three children, have suffered serious burns in a fire caused by a suspected gas leak at a house in Narayanganj's Kanchpur.

They have been admitted to Dhaka’s National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in critical condition.

Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute, said the incident occurred around 5:30am on Thursday.

The victims are Manab Chowdhury, 40, his wife Bachha, 38, and their daughters Munni, 14, Tinni, 12, and Mouri, 6.

Manab suffered burns on 45 percent of his body, his wife on 20 percent, Mouri on 36 percent, Munni on 28 percent, and Tinni on 22 percent. Their condition is “critical”, Shawon said.

Neighbour Sabinoy Das, who brought the victims to the hospital, said the family lived on the ground floor of a three-storey building in the BSCIC area.

“I don't know how the fire started, but I heard it was caused by a gas leak,” he added.
