Rumeen Farhana has warned that the consequences will be dire if the BNP fails to control its grassroots activists, after she faced obstruction while attempting to pay tribute to Language Movement martyrs at a Shaheed Minar.

Speaking at her Shahbazpur home in Sarail around 1:45am on Saturday, the Brahmanbaria-2 lawmaker cautioned that the party must monitor local leaders and take swift action against “disorderly behaviour”, as the government has only recently assumed office.

Rumeen, who secured her position as an independent "rebel" candidate, observed that after 15 years of living under immense pressure and being forced into hiding, certain activists are now exhibiting "terrifying aggression" while attempting to exploit their political titles.

She warned that failing to act immediately could harm both the party and the government’s reputation.

Earlier, during the opening hours of International Mother Language Day, Rumeen encountered a direct confrontation at the Sarail Upazila Shaheed Minar.

A group of activists led by former BNP general secretary Anwar Hossain reportedly targeted her with slogans, triggering a scuffle.

The MP claimed the men shredded her floral wreath, forcing her to leave the premises under a security escort without paying her respects.

Reflecting on the protocol, Rumeen said: “According to the Warrant of Precedence, as an elected member of parliament, I am the first to offer flowers.

“Unfortunately, some BNP men launched an actual assault on my supporters and created a situation where I was nearly pushed to the ground.”

She said the attack appeared “deliberate”, led by a “thug-like figure with a group of unruly youths”.

“They are struggling to accept their defeat. I won independently. Their attempts, including using millions of taka, failed. One of their sons is in the Army, and they tried to exploit that connection, but it did not succeed,” she added.

Attempts to reach Anwar were unsuccessful.
