Authorities have suspended traffic after a section of road collapsed at the Narinda intersection in Dholaikhal when soil beneath it gave way following a leak in an ageing WASA water pipeline.

Police cordoned off the area to prevent accidents after the cave-in on Sunday afternoon during persistent rain, when a large crater formed and the surrounding road also began to collapse.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) officials inspected the site on Monday before repair work began.

DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam said, "An old WASA pipeline beneath the road developed a leak, washing away the soil underneath and causing the collapse.

"We have started repairs, but it will take about a week to restore the road fully."
