Police have started a case over the alleged harassment of former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda.
The case was filed on Tuesday afternoon against members of the BNP’s volunteer wing, the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, according to Hafizur Rahman, chief of Uttara West Police.
He said the charges include “unauthorised entry into the former CEC’s home, physical assault, and public humiliation by forcing him to wear a garland made of shoes".
The case, initiated by Sub-Inspector Sajib Hasan, names six accused individuals, all of whom are said to be followers of Swechchhasebak Dal leader Farid, who was identified with a single name. Along with them, 20 unidentified people have been accused.
Among those named is Hanif Mia, secretary of the Swechchhasebak Dal’s Uttara West unit, who was detained by the army on Tuesday.
Other accused include Dulal, president of the Swechchhasebak Dal’s Turag unit; Selim, convenor of the Uttara West unit; Kaiyum, joint convener of the Uttara East unit -- all identified with a single name-- and activist Mojammel Hossain Dhali. All of them are in hiding.
On Sunday, Huda was publicly harassed when a group of people stormed his residence, placed a garland of shoes around his neck, and handed him over to police. Some livestreamed the incident.
Hafizur said that Dhali is seen in one such video footage, assaulting Huda with a shoe.
“All the accused have been identified using that video,” he added.
Earlier that same day, the BNP had filed a case at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against Huda and two other former election commissioners, holding them responsible for irregularities in last three national elections. The complaint also named the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina as an accused.
Hours after the case was filed, a mob entered Nurul’s Uttara residence and attacked him. Police later took him into custody and showed him as arrested in the case filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Investigators have since secured a four-day remand to question him in custody.
Amid widespread criticism, the interim government has warned to take action against those involved in mob assaults.
