Four sentenced to life imprisonment in an Agartala serial blasts case

A court in Agartala in the Indian state of Trupura has sentenced four people to life imprisonment for their involvement serial blasts that injures some seventy six people in the city in October 2008.

At the end of a seven-year trial, Additional Sessions Judge S B Datta on Tuesday held all four guilty of attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and other offences.
 
“The accused have been found guilty under IPC 120 Section B and IPC 307,” said Special Public Prosecutor L R Khadim.
 
 “They are declared as listed extremists by the central government. Organizations like the ATTF and NLFT are banned. They are the open and underground members of these extremist groups,” he added.
 
He said 12 persons were accused but five were absconding and hiding in ATTF camps at Satcheri, in Bangladesh.
 
Seven persons were arrested but three were acquitted.
 
Four others - Dinesh Debbarma, Kumaria Debbarma, Sachindra Debbarma and Bikash Debbarma  -were found guilty of plotting and triggering five blasts ahead of Durga Puja in busy market places and the city bus terminus.
 
Three acquitted are Santanu Choudhury, Amal Acharjee and Budhi Debbarma.
 
On October 1, 2008, serial blasts had rocked Tripura's capital Agartala.
 
Seventy-six people were injured, 30 of them critically.
 
Most of those hurt were doing their Durga Puja and Eid marketing.  
 
The blasts had occurred over a span of 45 minutes.
 
The first bomb had gone off at the Gol Bazaar area. Five minutes later, the second explosion followed near the Radha Nagar bus stop.
 
There were subsequent blasts at the Old Motor stand in Gol Bazaar, MG Bazaar and near Priya Motors in the Palace Compound.
