Bangladesh MPs asked to bring to light breastfeeding benefits

Health Minister Mohammed Nasim has urged the members of parliament to speak about the benefits of breastfeeding in public gatherings in their constituencies.

He sought the their support for increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding, which means nothing except breast milk until six months of age, in Bangladesh

The minister was speaking at a seminar on breastfeeding and the role of MPs at a city hotel on Thursday.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Fazle Rabbi Miah chaired the meeting organised by the health ministry with the support of Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation.

The rate of exclusive breastfeeding that has effect on child’s growth is 55 percent in Bangladesh.

This year, the World Breastfeeding Week from Aug 1 to Aug 7 was themed on “Breastfeeding: A key to sustainable development”.

The government said breastfeeding was linked to all of the 17 goals of the SDGs.
