British Charity Sir William Beveridge Foundation in Dhaka is organising the summit with an aim to raise awareness about the disease which often incapacitates a person even after treatment.

President of Dhaka Neuroscience Summit 2O16 Dr Jiban Kanai Das at a press briefing on Wednesday said any person can suffer stroke any time.

“So we need to know what we’ll do immediately and after treatment,” the retired army major general said.

Head of neurosurgery department of Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College and Hospital Prof ASM Kamrul Hassan, who will be the keynote speaker, said with rising life expectancy, the incidence of stroke has also increased globally.

Bangladesh does not have specific statistics on stroke, but Prof Hassan said treatment opportunity has expanded over the years.

“We’ll show what kind of services we can offer in Bangladesh for stroke management and rehabilitation.”

He also said post-treatment physiotherapy can help one return to “almost normal life”.

Secretary of the Summit Dr Subrato Ghosh said Health Minister Mohammed Nasim would inaugurate the meet while the former president of India’s Neurological Society, Prof RN Bhattacharya, will join it.

Uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking are known as ‘risk factors’ for stroke.
