“There are 8,500 branches of various banks in the country at the moment. Some think this is enough,” he said at a ceremony in Sylhet on Thursday.
“The country is densely populated. Many live in villages. Considering this, the number of bank branches in the country is not enough. So its number should be raised.”
Although there were some isolated ‘scandalous’ incidents, but there were no dearth of capabilities in government banks, Muhith further added.
“Private banks do not provide the facilities that are given by state-owned banks. Government-owned banks go to villages, private banks do not. So state owned banks are needed.”
There are 48 banks, including both state-owned and private, operating in the country. Awami League approved establishment of six more during their last term.
