The UK government’s cultural and educational wing on Saturday said it was running its operations “remotely” and planned to continue all operations and services across Bangladesh, though the offices remain temporarily closed.
The council hopes to reopen its offices and resume normal services to the public “as soon as possible.”
The earlier decision of the British Council to suspend operations temporarily followed the terrorist attack on July 1 which left 20 hostages, mostly foreigners, and two policemen dead.
The British government in its travel alert warned citizens to be cautious in Dhaka as it believed there remained a high threat from terrorism in Bangladesh.
In Bangladesh, the British Council conducts over 100,000 exams annually.
It has assured its partner English medium schools, parents and all O Level and A Level candidates (Cambridge International Examinations and Pearson Edexcel) that the exams will take place on time, as scheduled.
“They are working on to deliver the exams services to the students who are the future leaders of Bangladesh,” read the statement.
“The British Council recognises the importance of these services to the young people and takes this responsibility very seriously.”
The registration deadline for the Cambridge International Examinations in November 2016 session has been extended to Aug 10 2016.
School candidates are requested to contact their schools for a unique school candidate registration link.
Private candidates can apply through the website www.britishcouncil.org.bd.
This is for all candidates from Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, and Khulna.
IELTS registration dates are still open for August and September 2016. The candidates are requested to register online at ielts.britishcouncil.org. IELTS results will be issued on the result day as per schedule.
Candidates in all five cities – Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna - can take the exam. All students are advised to contact the Customer Services for any post-test service.
During this temporary closure, the Customer Services of the British Council will be responding to queries through email ([email protected]), Live Chat (through websitewww.britishcouncil.org.bd), Facebook (BritishCouncilBangladesh), and telephone (+88 09666773377) in the usual office hours.
Along with examinations services, the British Council is also running all corporate English courses and workshops as per schedule.
Its Active Citizens Youth Leadership Training programme is also running smoothly.
A pre-departure briefing is also scheduled on Aug 7 for three winners of the Manchester University Equity and Merit Scholarship 2016. They will leave for the UK to pursue their Masters studies starting from Sep 2016.
