Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, the head teacher at Piyar Sattar Latif High School was assaulted by locals on Friday and then made to do sit-ups holding ears in the presence of local MP AKM Salim Osman.

On Tuesday, the school authorities sacked him for allegedly making statements criticising religion and for other charges, including corruption.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Nahid described the incident of public humiliation of a teacher as ‘disgraceful’.

He said that an inquiry is being conducted jointly by his ministry and the Directorate of Secondary Education and Higher Education.

“The probe body have returned (from Narayanganj) after working for the whole night.

“We will take a decision as soon as their report is available,” said Nahid.

On school management’s decision to sack the teacher, he said that it had nothing to do with his ministry.

“That’s why a probe has been opened. We have to follow certain procedures before taking any step, otherwise you will question it,” the minister told reporters.

Nahid said they would take measures against all responsible for the incident and added they would look into everyone’s role.

He refuted allegations that his ministry did not take a ‘firm stance’ after the incident.

“We have condemned it. I am reiterating that it’s totally unacceptable and is disgraceful for all of us.”
