Md Asaduzzaman, Resident Medical Officer of Narayanganj Sadar Hospital, carried out the post-mortem examination on Sunday.
“Each of the victims had been strangled to death. They also bore marks of injury inflicted by some heavy object on their heads,” he said.
When asked if the victims had been made unconscious before being killed and if any of the two women had been raped before being murdered, the doctor told reporters that one would have to wait for the forensic report for answers to such questions.
The five bodies were found on Saturday night in a flat belonging to an expatriate, Ismail, in the city’s Baburail.
The victims are Taslima Begum, 40, her son Shanto, 10, daughter Sumaiya, 5, brother Morshedul, 25, and Taslima’s sister-in-law Lamia, 25.
Taslima’s husband, Shafiqul Islam, who is employed as a driver in a private company, was admitted to Samorita Hospital in Dhaka on Saturday night after reportedly falling ill on learning of the incident.
He was taken to the Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station for questioning on Sunday morning.
Police had said on Saturday the causes of the deaths could either be a slitting of throats or heavy blows to the heads of the victims.
Narayanganj CID’s Assistant Superintendent of Police Ehsan Uddin Chowdhury told bdnews24.com on Sunday morning: “The killers are not professionals. The victims were first hit on the head with some sharp weapon and were then strangled by a use of cloth around their necks.”
RMO Md Asaduzzaman also corroborated Chowdhury’s view that the killers were not professionals.
Meanwhile, Shafiqul Islam has filed a case against several unidentified persons with Narayanganj Sadar police.
Police have also been questioning his brother Sharif Mia and their nephew Mahfuz, and deceased Morshedul’s cousin Shahazada.
