The incident has been reported from the port city's Kapashgola early Wednesday after the nation paid tribute to the memory of Bangladesh's founding father the previous day.

The installation, which also includes an image of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was put up almost a year ago, said leaders of the Awami League's student front.

Some of kind of liquid has been splashed on the portrait covered with glass.

Subhash Mallik, a student leader of the Chittagong College, said miscreants splashed petrol on the portrait.

"They also set fire to one of floral wreaths put during the National Mourning Day programmes."

Mallik claimed they have obtained video footages of the incident captured by CCTV camera of a nearby shop.

"Around 4:46am, three to four persons splashed petrol on it. They were later joined by some others, who threw a plant tub at it, but no major damage has been done as the portrait is covered with thick glass," he told bdnews24.com.

Local police chief visited the spot after the incident was reported.

"We have inspected the scene and trying to gather evidence," said Panchlaish police station OC Mahiuddin Mahmud.

Replying to a query over the video footage and splashing petrol, he told bdnews24.com, "We will comment after going through the crime scene evidences."
