Outgoing Canadian high commissioner commends Bangladesh's global role

The outgoing Canadian high commissioner has lauded Bangladesh’s “pioneering role" in global affairs including migration, climate change, women empowerment, socioeconomic development, peacekeeping and peace building.

Benoît-Pierre Laramée made a farewell call on Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali at the State Guest House Padma on Sunday.

The foreign ministry said Laramée particularly commended the role of Bangladesh government in "extending humanitarian assistance to Rohingya people".

He also praised the “leadership role” played by Bangladesh in the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

He termed Bangladeshi people “very friendly” and thanked the government for extending their wholehearted support and cooperation towards his initiatives for strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The foreign minister congratulated him for his successful tour of duty in Bangladesh.

He said Bangladesh has the “best of relationship with Canada, with the Prime Minister of Canada and the friendly people of Canada”.

He said Canada is a “time-tested” friend of Bangladesh and the spirit of partnership will continue to flourish in depth and dimensions in the coming days.

He also conveyed gratitude, on behalf of the government of Bangladesh and its people, to the Canadian government and its people for their steadfast support in the 'development strides' of Bangladesh.

The outgoing high commissioner earlier called on State Minister of Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam on Wednesday and discussed issues of bilateral interest.
