Body of one among three missing swimmers found at Moinot Ghat

The fire service has recovered the body of one of the three students, who went missing after bathing at Moinot Ghat in Dhaka’s Dohar on Wednesday.

Mahim, 20, was found dead in the river about two kilometres away from the spot around 9:15am, said Mohammadpur police SI Arab Ali. He was a first-year student of Dhaka’s United International University.

Supriyo Dhali, a 19 year old student of Dhaka Commerce College and Salman Bin Jamal from Monipur School and College are still missing.

Locals said, five friends, including Mahim, Suprio, Salman, came to Moinot Ghat on Tuesday, the day after Eid.

They went into bathe in the river one and half kilometres away from the Moinot Ghat and three were dragged away by the strong currents.

SI Arab Ali said that Police, Coast Guard and divers from Fire Service started rescue operation immediately afterwards.

They continued the operation until midnight and resumed it Wednesday morning and found Mahim’s body.

Divers are still searching for the two others, he told.

Arab Ali told bdnews24.com that police were on alert this year after three university students died in 2016 at the same spot. However, those five students went into the river away from the Moinot Ghat, dodging the police.
