A twenty kilometres stretch  on the crucial highway was literally choked after a head-on collision between a truck  and a covered van.

The truck was travelling from northern Bangladesh to Dhaka and the covered van was heading in the opposite direction, when they rammed into each other at Tangail’s Basail Upazila around 8pm on Tuesday , Tangail Traffic Police Inspector Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com.

“The covered van blocked the traffic causing a massive snarl on either side of the road. Though police were able to remove the covered van around 10pm, the traffic congestion continued for a while,” he said.

At least 20km of road from Rasulpur to Mirzapur’s Pakulla was choked , said traffic police inspector SM Shahidur Rahman.

Traffic was almost at a standstill until 1:30am and began moving slowly thereafter, Rahman said, adding , it cleared up only around 4am.

Though there are no other obstructions left , large potholes and construction work on the four-lane highway has slowed down movement of vehicles, Rahman said.
