6 Barisal City Corporation councillors suspended on charges of violence

The local government ministry has suspended six Barisal City Corporation ward councillors accused in cases of violence.

Barisal City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Md Wahiduzzaman confirmed that he had received the order from the ministry on Tuesday.

The suspended councillors are Syed Akbar Hossain of Ward 7, Harun ar Rashid of Ward 9, Mir AKM Jahidul Kabir of Ward 18, Firoze Ahmed of Ward 24, Zia Uddin Sikder of Ward 25 and Farid Uddin Ahmed of Ward 26.

Zia Uddin is the secretary general of the Barisal Metropolitan BNP, Frioze Ahmed is the assistant chairperson, Akber Hossain and Jahidul

Kabir are joint secretaries, Farid Uddin is the agricultural affairs secretary, and Harun ur Rashid is a member.

The chief executive officer said the ministry has ordered their suspension due to their indictment on charges of violence against the six in several court cases.

According to Wahiduzzaman, section 12.1 of the 2009 City Corporation Act states that any councillors under investigation on criminal charges are to be suspended.

“They have been suspended according to that section of the law because of their indictment.”
