The commission has completed all the preparation for fair elections through which it would answer some of the questions raised by the critics on neutrality.

The ruling Awami League accepted the EC constituted by the president and led by KM Nurul Huda, but its main rival the BNP termed Huda as “their man” and rejected the EC.

BNP said a fair election is not possible under this EC.

Analysts said how the new EC would perform, should be reflected in this election as this is for the first time the EC is conducting the election in one and a half dozen local government bodies since taking over in February.

The Upazila and municipality elections are being held under the party banner, so both the BNP and AL are participating in the polls along with other parties directly.

“The EC is apparently aware of the challenges lying ahead. They already visited the Upazilas, and municipalities to oversee the preparations,” said one analyst.

Commissioner Mahbub Talukder during a recent visit to Hossainpur in Kishoreganj said: “the image of EC depends on this election as this is the first large-scale elections under this EC.”

The first single election under the new EC was held on Feb 22 at Baghaichharhi municipality in Rangamati.

On Monday, elections to the posts of chairman, vice-chairman and female vice-chairman will be held in 14 Upazilas.

Election of mayor in Patuakhali's Galachipa and ward commissioners in three other municipalities will be held on the same day.
