The victim, 62-year old Abul Kalam Azad, hailed from Ghona village in Satkhira’s Sadar Upazila. He ran a construction material store in Ghona Bazar.

On Monday night a group of men set upon him and beat him up severely at Ghona Bazar, said Satkhira Police OC Firoze Hossain Molla.

The victim was taken to Satkhira Sadar Hospital with critical injuries and then passed away there around 2:30am on Tuesday.

The victim’s son, Akhtarul Islam, accused seven suspects in a case at the Sadar Police Station.

“Four of those named in the case were arrested on Monday night.”

The four detained have been identified as Mominul Islam, ‘Wadud’, Munna Hossain and Md Roni, all from Ghona village.

According to Akhtarul Islam, Mominul had taken a few hundred thousand taka worth of construction materials on loan from his father’s shop.

“Mominul would be put off with my father when he asked him to pay the bill,” he said. “My father had gone to ask for the money again on Monday night when Mominul and his accomplices began to beat him.”

The victim had served under Sector 8 during the Liberation War, said Freedom Fighters Council member and Satkhira Upazila Command Commander Hasanul Islam.

“We fought together at Hakimpur, Kakdanga and Bhomra Land Port,” he said.
